At the Brandenburg Principal and State Stud in Neustadt (Dosse), which is steeped in tradition, first-class, successful horses have been reared for over 200 years for sport and breeding at the highest level. Founded by Friedrich Wilhelm II in 1788 “For the good of the state”, this stud contributes to preserving a unique cultural heritage. In addition to providing high-quality stallions, the Neustadt stud also keeps a herd of excellent mares on its 400 ha grounds. The mare Poetin, twice Federal Champion and World Champion of the Young Dressage Horses, made this breeding facility famous well beyond the borders of Germany. The latest representative is the Federal Champion 2006, Quaterback, by Quaterman, who aroused intense interest in all the German breeding regions and is now attracting attention from around the world.
Since 1978 there has also been a central testing facility on the stud premises, which has become one of the most prestigious in the whole of Germany, putting some 250 stallions and mares a year through their paces. In 1921, the then state stable master Waldemar von Henniges founded the riding and driving school in Neustadt (Dosse) where approximately 50 courses a year are run. The focus is on training amateur teachers for riding and driving sports and there are courses for novices and advanced riders. The Brandenburg Principal and State Stud offers a unique facility with the “Riding in School” project which it runs in collaboration with the Neustadt Office and the Berlin-Brandenburg Equestrian Sports Association. Riding is offered as an optional subject and particularly talented students attend special classes to support them in their pursuit of equestrian sports.
The Graf Lehndorff Institute for Equine Science, founded in October 2007, is a cooperation between the Brandenburg Principal and State Stud and the Vienna University of Veterinary Medicine with its headquarters in Neustadt/Dosse.
Visitors can browse the Carriage and Stud Museum to gain an insight into the history of the stud. They can also explore the 2 stud farms at any time of the year on their own or as part of a guided tour or carriage ride. Traditionally, the stallion parades take place over 3 weekends in September. Besides many small tournaments, the equestrian sports calendar for the beginning of the year includes the CSI Neustadt/Dosse in January and the State Championships in Dressage and Show jumping in July. Theatre shows and summer concerts are held in the stud grounds too.
